Interclub Digital Slide Competitions

 Guidelines/ Procedures

This competition will be held four times each competition year, beginning in the fall. (The times and number of competitions may be modified in subsequent years by the Director of EID Interclub Competitions.) Any club that is a PSA member may choose to compete as a club, with honors awarded to individuals, and to the clubs with the highest accumulated points for the year. The photographs will be digital only (traditional film images scanned into digital format or direct from digital cameras), and will meet PSA’s general requirements for photographs entered into exhibitions. (The photographic work must be the maker’s, commercial clip art is not allowed, etc.) The category is General, and includes Alterations.

Each club may enter up to 6 images per competition from 6 different makers. (A full compliment for one season would be 24 images. Only one image from the same club maker per competition is allowed.) Make-up images are not eligible for honors. No more than one month’s images may be made up in one season. If a host club uses judges from outside of their club, the host club may enter the regular number of images for that competition, excluding any make-ups. If the host club chooses to use judges who are members, the host club may not enter any images for that competition, but can elect to enter make-ups in any of the other competitions for that season. Because of the special situation, these "host club" make-ups are eligible for awards.

One club member shall be responsible for emailing or mailing the images to the Host Club.

Qualifications for Images

Each competing club representative shall email the images in proper format to the Host Club before the announced closing date. Alternatively, the images may by sent by traditional mail on a CD formatted for both MAC and PC platforms*, and must arrive by the closing date to qualify as entries. (The Host Club does not have to return the CDs.)

Each image must have the following maximum size:

Horizontal images will be no more than 1024 pixels wide.
Vertical images will be no more than
768
pixels tall.
(
Unless your image proportions are in the exact ratio of 4 to 3, one of these dimensions will be less than the maximum. The images will be projected as received, as long as not over the maximum.)

Save the file in jpeg format to achieve a file no larger than 300Kb.

Other preferred settings (but not required): color space – sRGB

File Naming

Files should follow this naming structure:

Windows users do not have to do any special formatting for CDs, since Macs can read Windows files. Mac users should format as ISO 9660 or PC & MAC Hybrid

Club name-last name of maker-entry #.jpg Clubs should use appropriate abbreviations or acronyms for the club name so that the file name remains short. As an example, the first image submitted from Pixel Image Camera Club for Bob Benson would be: pixel-benson-1.jpg When submitting the files to the host club as attachments, include in the body of the email the actual title to accompany the file name. (List the file name with the actual image title.)

Host Club Responsibilities

The designated representative from the host club will receive the images for the next competition. (The representative’s email will be announced to all interested clubs via the EID Competition Chairman’s list and by posting in the EID section of the PSA Journal.) If there should be problems with the image or information received, the representative should attempt to contact the sender to resolve the problem. Any problem that cannot be resolved in this manner should be referred to the Competition Chairman. Images received after the announced closing date may be rejected, with a note back to the sender.

Select three qualified judges, and notify them of the date, place, and time or the event. For purposes of impartiality, try to use judges outside of the host club. No judge may have images submitted into the competition.

Use a suitable means of viewing the images for the judging. If a digital projector is used, the resolution must be at least 1024 pixels wide with enough brightness, contrast, and sharpness to display the images properly. Individual monitors may be used, as long as the judges can comfortably view the image. Extreme care must be taken to show the images on a calibrated device. For monitors, there are many hardware/software solutions. For a digital projector, fewer options are available, but it can be adjusted to give image quality similar to a calibrated monitor (no off colors, etc.). Verifying the accuracy with a grayscale and an image with flesh tones is highly recommended. Previewing those images to the judges will also be useful so that they understand the image quality before judging.

It is up to the host as to the preferred software to use for viewing and scoring the images. Many methods are available, but none of the selected methods may show the file name while viewing the image to the judge, due to the information in the filename. The results of the competition will be sent by email to the EID Competition Chair for further dissemination. The report must be in an Excel or Word compatible file, with the score listed for each image by club. At the beginning of the report, list the honors, and include a section listing the judges and club affiliations.

Judging Images shall be scored from 1 to 5, with the maximum total score of 15 possible. 20% of the scores, excluding make-ups, will be eligible for honors, based on highest scores. If required, from that lowest score group only, entries in excess of the needed number shall be dropped using the standard “IN” and “OUT” voting method. (At least two judges must vote an image in.) Once the approximately 20% have been selected, the judges will select approximately one half for Honorable Mention, and one half for Award, again using “IN” and “OUT’ method. Finally, from the awards only, one image will be selected as Best of Show.
